Chillicothe City School District set out to replace its century-old elementary buildings with two new schools and renew its athletics facilities, on condensed urban sites in the heart of Ohio’s first capital.
What we did
MCS entered at the program of requirements, before design, and served as the district’s owner’s representative through a Construction Manager at Risk delivery. Every change order and pay application came through us before it reached the district.
The project finished on time and on budget.
What it included
Intermediate School
Located on the corner of Arch St. & Vine St., the new Intermediate School opened to the public in January of 2019. Stretching over 121,400 sq ft, the building was designed with 21st century learning environments to promote interactive learning and higher-level thinking skills, and showcases the rich history of the city of Chillicothe throughout. It was constructed in close proximity to an urban environment with an extremely condensed footprint.
Primary School
Located on the corner of Cherry St. & Mill St., the new Primary School opened to the public in August of 2018. Stretching over 79,000 sq ft, the building was designed with 21st century learning environments. It was built on the site of the old Western School Building, which stood for 106 years after its construction in 1911 and was demolished as part of the project.
Athletics Complex renovation
After securing funding in November of 2015, the Board of Education approved the construction of pavilions on both the east and west sides of the stadium, with ticket booths, restrooms and concessions, plus new parking along Stacey Rd. The Obadiah Harris & Family Athletic Complex is home to Cavalier Track & Field and Football, and after the renovation the district was selected to host OHSAA playoff games. To preserve local history, the cupola from the former J.A. Smith Middle School was saved before demolition and now stands in the southern portion of the stadium.
Baseball Complex
The district built a new baseball complex on the corner of East Main Street & Cutright Drive, on the site of the former Mt. Logan Elementary. The complex followed the abatement and demolition of several vacant buildings after the new schools were completed.
Demolitions
The Western Annex, built in 1911, and Hopewell Elementary were abated and demolished simultaneously, with asbestos removed from both buildings within the six-week timeframe. Both demolitions sat inside highly condensed residential areas, so the buildings were kept watered down to control dust and protect air quality. The cleared Western Annex site became the home of the new Primary School.
